The Texas Midwest Region encompasses 25 counties in central Texas and includes Abilene, San Angelo and Brownwood. A major military presence includes Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene and Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo. The region has deep roots in oil and gas production and has created a thriving alternative energy sector, including large facilities that produce components for wind towers and turbines. Additionally, the region has built solid manufacturing, health-care, biotechnology and distribution sectors, and several major companies including Sitel, Verizon and Ethicon have substantial operations in the region. A strong transportation network includes proximity to interstate and state highway systems, rail lines and regional air service. The region's communities include several historic and rehabilitated downtowns, an abundant supply of outdoor recreation activities include boating, fishing and hunting, and significant galleries, museums, festivals and shopping.
