Civil War Reenactments Live on at Fort Concho
Published Mar 18, 2008

It wasn’t built during the Civil War, but it has a Civil War connection.

The Fort Concho Historic Landmark is a year-round destination for visitors wanting to experience Civil War re-enactments. It was established in 1867 along the banks of the Concho River, and today is owned and operated by the city of San Angelo.

The fort was constructed to protect frontier settlements, and to help stop hostile threats in the area during those days. The last soldiers left the site in June 1889, and Fort Concho was deactivated and abandoned.

Today, the former Army post has 23 original and restored structures, and is open to tourists.
