Scurry County Festival Commemorates White Buffalo
Published Feb 19, 2009

A legendary frontier hunter is known for killing one of only seven white buffaloes ever seen in the United States.

In October 1876, J. Wright Mooar of Snyder in Scurry County used his Sharps rifle to kill the unusual beast. Mooar kept the prized white hide throughout his lifetime, even though Teddy Roosevelt once offered him $5,000 for it.

Today, the original hide is on display at the ranch home of Mooar’s granddaughter, Judy Hays. In addition, a White Buffalo Festival is held in Scurry County each October, and a bronze statue of a white buffalo is on the courthouse square.
