Hendrick Medical Center Explores Expansion

Hendrick Medical Center plans an $80 million expansion.
A significant capital investment will reshape the future of Hendrick Medical Center.
The $80 million plan, dubbed Project 2010, represents the latest chapter for the 84-year-old Abilene hospital. Plans include a new four-story patient tower and physician office building.
“It’s going to help us reshape our campus as we build new facilities and extensively upgrade a number of existing patient and support areas. This will be the largest expansion program in our history,” says Tim Lancaster, Hendrick Health System CEO.
The project has been on the drawing board since 2004 when trustees and staff began working toward a new plan for the hospital. Out of that emerged calls for a new patient tower that can eventually be expanded to 12 floors.
A key part of the project focuses on developing operations for the care of children. Hospital officials envision 20 patient rooms with sleeping accommodations for parents, including two rooms designed for chemotherapy use. The area will also feature two playrooms, a pair of exam rooms and three pediatric intensive-care units.
For décor, the hospital will use the Berenstain Bears children’s book series. Each of the 20 rooms will be decorated based off inspiration from one of the books. The BirthPlace will feature eight delivery rooms, four diagnostic rooms and other operations.
